France Vs Nigeria
Les Bleus eased through Group E, sealing top spot and setting up a last 16 tie against Nigeria in the process. This will be their toughest test yet but I’m backing the French to pass it with flying colours. Despite the absence of Franck Ribery and Samir Nasri, France still possess great strength in depth. With Paul Pogba, Loic Remy and Antoine Griezmann usually starting the game from the bench, Didier Deschamps has an abundance of quality at his disposal.
France have got goals in them but the Super Eagles also pose a great attacking threat and can really cause the French backline problems with their pace. Although it will be a close game, I think France’s quality will prevail.
Germany Vs Algeria
The Germans weren’t at their best in Recife against the USA and struggled to break down a stubborn American defence. I have no doubt that we will see a similar game in Porto Alegre on Monday, with Germany having the majority of possession and Algeria parking the bus. However, like France, Germany have an incredibly strong squad and in Thomas Muller and Miroslav Klose, coach Joachim Low has two real match winners at his disposal.
Les Fennecs have done fantastically well to get to the knock-out stages of the World Cup and we saw what it meant to all their players during their celebrations on Thursday night. Unfortunately for the Algerians, I think this will be a step too far for them but I have no doubt that they will bow out fighting.
