Serie A – A new season approaches
After an exciting summer of Euro Cup football the Serie A is finally back and no one is more excited than our team of pundits at mrbigwin.com.
It has been a fairly quiet transfer market for most of the teams, except league leaders Juventus, which goes to show the desperate investment and organization required, before the Serie A can compete again with the likes of La Liga and The Premier League.
The Champions
Reigning champions Juventus look set to win their sixth successive Scudetto after an extremely positive transfer market to date, including star front man Higuain from Napoli, superstar wingback Dani Alves on a free transfer and also hot midfield maestro Pjanic from rivals Roma. Higuain has been the centre of alot of ‘fat jokes’ since he joined his new Juve colleagues a few weeks ago, seeming to have put on quite a belly over the summer break. They have added a lot of quality in depth to their squad but also weakened nearest rivals in the process. After over a month of endless rumors it seems that Paul Pogba has moved for a world record transfer fee to Manchester United, a saga which has captured the football world’s attention for most of the summer. Considering the reinforcements brought in Juventus are looking like favorites already.
Second and Third
Napoli finished second last season after failing to maintain the level of consistency required to keep up with The Old Lady. The Partnepoi last their star front man Higuain after Juventus matched the release clause fee and now have just under one month to replace their former hitman. Despite signing Giaccherini, who will undoubtedly add a lot of creativity in the middle of the park, the side from the South desperately need reinforcements or seriously losing out of Champions League football this upcoming season.
The Giallorossi have brought in a number of key reinforcements as they try to challenge Juventus for the long awaited Scudetto. These include lightning fast winger Salah from Chelsea, striker El Shaarawy who had a positive spell on loan last season as well as defenders Juan Jesus, Fazio and Rudiger. Luciano Spalletti worked wonders on his return to the capital half way through last season and will hope that his side can hit top form immediately in order to keep up with Juventus, despite the departure of star midfielder Pjanic.

The rest of the pack
Finishing fourth last season, there we definite improvements even since Mancini took over however many Inter fans will complain about some of the poor transfer and tactical decisions made by the tactician, also currently on his second spell with the Nerazzurri. Following the partial takeover of the club by Chinese giants Suning however to date they have had to work their way around FFP meaning only Candreva has been signed from Lazio while former attacking midfielder Banega moved on a free transfer in June. The pressure is really mounting on Mancini to qualify for Champions League football, however with the added distraction of Europa League, this might prove too much for the side from Milan. Further to the above in the past days Mancini’s contract was terminated by mutual consent and was replaced by Dutchman Frank De Boer. Inter still hope to sign J0ao Mario and have also been linked with Insigne from Napoli and Gabriel Almeida from Brazilian side Santos.
Fiorentina ended what could be considered a positive season in 5th place, as a congested fixture schedule and lengthy injury list took their toll on Montella’s side. La Viola have made just three relatively unknown signings which should be enough to fend off nearest rivals Sassuolo, Milan and Lazio who have had relatively quiet summer. Following what was undoubtedly a great season for Sassuolo, who finished 6th and secured Europa League football, we believe they have not yet done enough to bolster their ranks and compete in both the Serie A and European front, in what might be a tough season for them.
Milan have acquired the services of Argentinian left back Leonel Vangioni, Paraguayan centre back Gustavo Raúl Gómez and forward Gianluca Lapadula. Once Europe’s mightiest side Milan continue to struggle in modern times under the unsturdy management of Galliani, once perceived to be a top transfer guru and invaluable club director. I reckon the Rossoneri are in for another tough season unless they can strengthen their squad in a number of departments. The side that finished 8th last season have so far signed Italian front man Immobile, following an unsuccessful spell in Spain, as they fancy their chances of qualifying for European football next season. In recent days Berlusconi has announced that he has agreed to sell his majority stake in AC Milan to a Chinese consortium, who hope to revive the Rossoneri’s ambitions.
Even though Juve will most likely retain their title, I expect a very tightly fought battle among the sides hovering directly beneath them who are all eyeing for the all important Champions League spots as well as the consolatory Europa League places.
