Serie A – Just one week to go!
All eyes will be on Juventus for the next few weeks after their star box-to-box midfielder Paul Pogba was sold to Manchester United for a world record fee of €105M. The question will now be how Allegri will use the likes of Pjanic, Marchisio and Khedira to fill the gap left by the Frechman. The Serie Champions have had a good summer with the likes of Higuain, Benatia and Pjanic strengthening the squad and have also done well in the pre-season friendlies, beating the likes of Tottenham Hotspurs and West Ham. Their more recent friendly ended in an exciting 2-2 draw against Espanyol with Dybala and Mandzukic grabbing the goals. Tonight they face German side Koln in what will be their last real test before the league start.
Second and Third
Despite the departure of front man Higuain, Napoli have had a positive preseason scoring 21 goals in the 5 games they have played to date, albeit against a lot of minnows. Manager Maurizio Sarri has one week left of tinkering before they travel to Pescara as they try and challenge The Old Lady for the Scudetto, which has eluded them since the days of Maradona.
Roma have been pipped to finish second by the bookies even though they will definitely miss the quality of midfielder Pjanic. The Romans most impressive preseason victory coming against Liverpool in an exciting 2-1 win with Salah and Dzeko grabbing the goals. Spalletti has his work cut out for him as he looks to keep up with Juventus in the race for the title.
The rest of the pack
You can sense a more positive attitude in yesterday’s friendly win over Scottish champions Celtic as Frank de Boer looks to dispel all the preseason problems in the Inter camp. Candreva scored a beauty late on and the Inter fans will undoubtedly be expecting great things from the Italian wingman.
Vincenzo Montella could be just the man Milan need to revive their hopes of breaking into the top three despite a lack of big name signings. Their light schedule this season might give the Rossoneri the edge over their closest rivals even though they were disappointing during the summer friendlies versus the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea.
