Napoli vs Empoli

Kick-off: Week 11, Friday 2 November

Napoli will be feeling good about their last second draw against Roma knowing they created more than enough chances to win the game convincingly. They only needed to capitalise on their good play. Carlo Ancelotti seemed happy with the draw but disappointed that it could easily have been 3 points. The home side looked very comfortable after the 20-minute mark but got distracted and this meant losing 2 precious points. The Partenopei now lie in 2nd place with a 6-point deficit from top spot.

Empoli fought a tough battle against Juventus. Forging ahead on 20 mins, the home side managed to valiantly hold on to a 1-0 until the 65th minute when they gave away a dubious penalty. Ronaldo converted and then settled the 2-1 with a screamer. Until then, Empoli seemed solid at the back.

Their head to head record against Napoli away does not tell a good story. The last two Napoli wins were convincing so this one is tough. The San Paolo is no friendly place for any team and we feel Empoli will be overwhelmed by Napoli’s will to get 3 points here.

  • Napoli to win outright
  • Over 2 yellow cards for Empoli

Inter vs Genoa

Kick-off: Week 11, Saturday 3 November

Inter are currently 2-0 up at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome against Lazio at the time of writing. They’re having a great season since their poor start. Looking convincingly like the 3rd best team in Italy. They had no chance against Barcelona but their efforts in Serie A are commendable. Last year they drew or lost these games.

Genoa are on the back of a 2-2 draw at the weekend at home to Udinese. The home side went ahead twice in the game and both times were caught off-guard and Udinese managed the draw. Genoa’s best player Piatek has not scored in 3 games and that is where their scoring runs a little dry.

San Siro is not a friendly place for Genoa. They’ve lost the last 5 straight here and have only scored 1 goal in the process. Icardi is also on fire having scored twice against Lazio and his tally is now at 6 (3rd place in Serie A top scorer table)

  • Inter to win outright
  • Over 8 total corners

Fiorentina vs Roma

Kick-off: Week 11, Saturday 3 November

Both teams in this fixture come off disappointing draws in their respective encounters at the weekend. The two teams both led and then conceded, and both also risked losing the game. This means we might have a cracker on our hands as these two high scoring teams meet in a Saturday evening fixture.

Roma will have the Champions league to think of during this game. An away fixture against CSKA in a cold Moscow road trip. Nevertheless, they cannot afford to miss out on this game. It is getting tight at the top 4 and Roma are flirting with danger.

The head to head in the last 5 games had both teams to score on 4 of 5 occasions so that seems like a good punt. Fiorentina are also very strong at home and their prowess on scoring is further highlighted at the Artemio Franchi.

Look out for Chiesa and Simeone for Fiore and Dzeko and El Shaarawy for Roma. Likely scorers in this one.

  • Over 4.5 yellow cards
  • Penalty in the match

Juventus vs Cagliari

Kick-off: Week 11, Saturday 3 November

Juventus have been absolutely lethal in their execution. They came back from a flawless win away to Manchester United to force a 2-1 win against a tough Empoli side. It almost felt like it was tougher to beat Empoli than Man Utd. Perhaps that is the perception as usually concentration and execution are at a much higher level on a Champions league night than a Saturday away fixture to Empoli in the Serie A. The squad rotation was also evident in this one. Rugani and De Sciglio both getting starting roles for the first time this season.

Cagliari had a great win against Chievo in an exciting 2-1 encounter. It was a high pace encounter between two mid table teams. The Sardi managed to pull away with a win but the nice thing to see was that they created great scoring chances.

There is no value in the Juventus outright win in this one. The odds are abysmal. The handicap for Juventus also scares us as there is a crucial Champions league fixture mid-week to think of.

Lazio vs SPAL

Kick-off: Week 11, Sunday 4 November

The Biancocelesti come off a hammering at the hands of Inter. 0-3 at home and not many chances created. This Lazio side needs a rude awakening and hopefully this game serves that purpose. Lazio are usually quite strong at home and hold their own. They however got handed a beating by a clinical Inter and Icardi’s finishing. SPAL do not have an Icardi, but as they have shown earlier this season, they can score goals.

SPAL come off a beating of their own. Losing 3-0 to Frosinone (officially the worst team to ever play in Serie A). This was a surprise defeat. The home side dominated the stats with possession, attempts on goal and tackles won. The result was somewhat different.

Looking into this game, one would think that Lazio would come back angry and hungry. Their squad is better than SPAL’s and they have the home advantage in this one. A great shot at redemption.

There have only been 4 previous encounters for this fixture and Lazio have come out on top in 3 of those at the Stadio Olimpico. Look out for Immobile to get back after a disappointing game against Inter.

  • Lazio to win convincingly
  • Immobile to score

Chievo vs Sassuolo

Kick-off: Week 11, Sunday 4 November

It seems that Ventura can’t get anything right. Two games at the helm of Chievo and two bad losses for the ex-Italy national team coach. Losses of the kind where you wonder whether Chievo are even fit to be in the Serie A next season. The squad looked lost and tense. Racking up reckless challenges and stacking up the yellow cards.

The home side are so bad that they are actually still on negative 1 point from their negative 3 start. They have managed 2 draws and 8 losses. They look all but certain to drop to Serie B next season.

Sassuolo on the other hand look promising at times and disappointing at others. We like their fast pace attacking and they have looked the part on many occasions this season.

This fixture at the Bentegodi is usually characterised by a drab draw game. This time things might be different. Home is not a safe place for Chievo. With fast paced players like Duncan and Kevin Prince Boateng in addition to Berardi upfront, we think Sassuolo come away with this one.

  • Sassuolo to win
  • Berardi to score anytime

Parma vs Frosinone

Kick-off: Week 11, Sunday 4 November

Parma will be looking to get back on track after being demolished by Atalanta. The score should actually be worse as Parma had their worst game to date in this season’s campaign. At half time the score was 0-0 but the Friulani never really started that game. Atalanta were clinical up front and got the result they deserved.

Frosinone shocked the Serie A with an away 3-0 win against SPAL. Many expected SPAL to win but it was Frosinone that were handing out the L. The Tardini has seen better opponents for Parma. This one won’t be a walk in the park for the home side, but it could turn out to be. Frosinone have been very disengaged when It comes to stronger opposition and Parma look set to win this one.

  • Parma to win
  • Gervinho to score

Sampdoria vs Torino

Kick-off: Week 11, Sunday 4 November

An interesting encounter here at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Sunday. Samp lie in a very respectable 6th place with 15 points after 10 games. Their 4 wins 3 losses and 3 draws is probably better than they imagined at this stage and they are ahead of the likes of Roma, Milan and Atalanta in the league table. They are also proving to be prolific scorers and this is helping them gain more confidence. At the weekend they were narrowly defeated by Milan. Sampdoria went up 2-1 with goals from the usual gang of Quagliarella and Saponara. The defeat was warranted as Milan played a fantastic final 30 minutes.

Torino also played a great game at home against Fiorentina and managed a 1-1 draw after being 1-0 down. This squad has a ton of potential but at times does not finish the chances created. Bellotti has been a far cry from last year’s campaign and this is the major difference for Mazzarri’s Granata. The Granata side from Turin are in 10th place only 1 point behind the pack of Europa League hopefuls. It has not been a bad start to the season but it could have been much better.

The rossoblu are quite successful at home against Torino. Torino’s last win at the Luigi Ferraris dates back to 2011. Also, it is quite clear that these games are usually volatile and produce an average of 2.5 goals per encounter. Better still, Sampdoria seem to get over the 1.5 team goals regularly in this fixture. Expect a lot of chances and high tempers as this game is crucial for both.

  • Over 1.5 goals
  • Over 3.5 yellow cards
  • Bellotti to score

Bologna vs Atalanta

Kick-off: Week 11, Sunday 4 November

Atalanta come into this game with a super convincing win against Parma with a 3-0 drubbing. Their confidence is back and their goalscoring ease also. The elimination from Europa League means that they are not burdened with fixtures they simply couldn’t cope with. The squad depth was not sufficient and Gasperini warned us of this earlier this summer.

The Bergamasci lie in 14th place and this is far lower than expected. In the end, we see them place in the 6th-8th range and by Christmas this will probably be the situation. Meanwhile they must win away games such as this one.

Their opponents Bologna are a far cry from a quality side. Their goal difference speaks for itself and after 10 games they are still on negative goal tally. There was a ray of light when Bologna went on to win 2 games in 3 outings against Roma and Udinese. Then, however they got back to their old boring ways with losses and draws. Inzaghi is simply not the right man for the job but in his defence the squad is poor. It lacks quality and this will show against an Atalanta side that is gunning for the win here.

The Neroazzurri from Bergamo love this fixture. They’ve won 3 of the last 5 here and have managed to score an impressive amount of goals each time without conceding. Look out for Gomez and Ilicic in this one to make an impact.

  • Atalanta to win outright
  • Gomez to score
  • Bologna over 3 team yellow cards

Udinese vs Milan

Kick-off: Week 11, Sunday 4 November

Final fixture of the weekend at the Dacia Arena and Udinese face Milan in an important match. This one should be entertaining as Milan seem to be gaining some momentum after a 1-0 defeat in the derby. The Rossoneri managed a good comeback win against Atalanta at the weekend with Cutrone and Higuain shining upfront. The running game proved to be what they needed and hitting 3 goals at home is something they haven’t done for a while. The home crowd were entertained.

Udinese managed a 2-2 draw away to Genoa. A tough fixture and one that showed character with Lasagna and De Paul each scoring to come away with a point. They key to this game for Udinese will be to use their fast wingers (Pussetto and Larsen) to keep Laxalt and Suso busy rather.

For Milan, this game will all be about Higuain and Cutrone imposing their prowess on an Udinese defence that is easily scored on. The Friulani have allowed a massive 9 goals in the last 4 games and this is their weak point. Gattuso’s side have to capitalise on this.

The last five encounters between Udinese and Milan in Udine have had both teams scoring in 4 of 5 with over 2.5 goals in 65% of all matches between these two. This one will be full of goals in a free flowing game.

  • Higuain to score
  • Both teams to score
  • Over 2.5 goals
