Premier League week 23 predictions

Wolves vs Leicester

Kick-off: Week 23, Saturday 19th January, 12:30

Gameweek 20 gets underway as Everton travel down to the south coast to take on Brighton at the Amex Stadium. Brighton will come into this one with lifted spirits after putting an end to three straight defeats with a draw at home to Arsenal. They still didn’t look completely at it in the game and could have easily got beaten. A better performance will be needed this weekend to win this one.

Leicester would have been left very disheartened last time out, losing out to 10-man Southampton 2-1 on home soil. This is a tougher test for them this weekend and if they put on the same level of performance in this one, they will go away with nothing yet again. Manager, Claude Puel, is under a lot of pressure at the minute and another defeat in this one could be the end of the road for him at Leicester.

With Wolves in the better form and being the home team this weekend, we can see them getting all three points from this one. Leicester just don’t seem like they are at it at the moment and teams like Wolves will pounce on that.

  • Correct score prediction: Wolves 2 – 0 Leicester
  • Odds: 8/1

Bournemouth vs West Ham

Kick-off: Week 23, Saturday 19th January, 15:00

Bournemouth lost 2-0 last time out when they traveled up to Merseyside to take on Everton but for much of the game were the better team. If only the side took there chances and the game could have been completely different. Brooks looks a bright prospect for the Cherries and a player who will cause many opponents problems going into the rest of the season.

West Ham will be full of confidence coming into this one after beating Arsenal at the London Stadium last weekend. The side showed great togetherness and heart in the match which will go a long way if they are to push on p the table. Samir Nasri was back in Premier League action against his old club and although he was getting stick from the Arsenal fans, he put on a good show and assisted the only goal of the game to cap off a good return to English football.

A tough one to call this because looking at the recent results and form, Bournemouth have been very poor. But watching the game against Everton, they definitely have enough quality to win games like these. However, with the attacking quality West Ham have, we’re backing them to snatch it.

  • Correct score prediction: Bournemouth 0 – 1 West Ham
  • Odds: 6/1

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace

Kick-off: Week 23, Saturday 19th January, 15:00

Liverpool will not want to make any mistakes this weekend which could see City close the gap if they were to open the door. Being the home team and losing just one game all season, it’s tough to see them dropping anything in this game but Crystal Palace are a side who on their day can scare the big guns meaning Jurgen Klopp’s men will need to be on their toes for the entire match.

Crystal Palace would have been extremely disappointed to have lost to Watford last time out after going in front in the match. It wasn’t as if the side played bad, but almost as if they were leggy towards the end of the match. Although we’re pretty much writing off an upset in this one, Palace can cause the bigger sides in the league problems, just like they showed away at Manchester City earlier on in the season.

We can only see one winner in this one and that’s Liverpool. The Reds have so much quality in their squad which even on a bad day should be enough to win this one. The likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Firmino could have a field day in this one if they are turn up firing.

  • Correct score prediction: Liverpool 3 – 0 Crystal Palace
  • Odds: 12/1

Manchester United vs Brighton

Kick-off: Week 23, Saturday 19th January, 15:00

What a difference a change of manager makes. A month or so ago when Jose Mourinho was sacked as the manager of the club, Champions League football next season looked impossible. However, with five wins on the bounce coming into this one, United have climbed just six points off the top four which will give them confidence going into the coming weeks. The impressive win over Tottenham last weekend really sent out a warning to other sides in the league.

Brighton will be nervous about the prospect of taking on this in form Manchester United side and will know they will have to be at there best to get anything from the match. The side defended very well last time out at home to Liverpool and only lost the game due to a penalty. If they can put on the same kind of performance this weekend, they may be able to cause the United attacking players problems.

If Manchester United are to challenge for the top six, they must follow up on performances like last weekend and get a win here and we think they might do just that. Although Brighton do tend to defend well, they struggle to keep clean sheets on the road.

  • Correct score prediction: Manchester United 3 – 1 Brighton
  • Odds: 18/1

Newcastle vs Cardiff

Kick-off: Week 23, Saturday 19th January, 15:00

This is a huge game at the bottom of the Premier League for both teams. Just one point separates the clubs with Newcastle falling into the bottom three last weekend and Cardiff just holding on above it. It’s been a tough couple of months for Newcastle who have been unable to win a match in 6. It seems like Rafa Benitez is becoming increasingly frustrated at the club over the lack of investment in the squad and the takeover being pushed back time after time.

Cardiff seem as if they have started to fall into a bit of a slump and with a draw at home to Huddersfield last weekend, it has seen them slip just one point above the bottom three. Games like these will either make or break your season and if we’re honest, we think Newcastle might have the edge in this encounter which will see Cardiff fall into the bottom three.

There’s not been much between these two sides so far this season. Cardiff were one of the favourites to go down before a ball was kicked and they have already proven they are going to be competitive. However, we think the experience of Rafa and Newcastle will come in handy in this one.

  • Correct score prediction: Newcastle 1 – 0 Cardiff
  • Odds: 7/1

Southampton vs Everton

Kick-off: Week 23, Saturday 19th January, 15:00

Southampton would have received a much-needed lift on the weekend after beating Leicester away from home. It was the first time the Saints have even scored at the King Power Stadium since 2011 so to win the match 2-1 and play 50 minutes with 10 men would have given the players and manager a lot of confidence coming into another big game this weekend.

Everton put an end of 5 games without a win on the weekend as they beat Bournemouth 2-1 on home soil. They were the second-best team for much of the match but a leaping header for Kurt Zouma before a low strike from Calvin-Lewis in the last minute of the game wrapped up the points. On their day, Everton could beat nearly anyone in the league but if they play as they did at home to Bournemouth, you can be sure Saints will be looking to take advantage.

Southampton are just one point above the relegation zone as it stands meaning they still have a very long way to go this season if they are to stay in the league. Everton are a lot safer but will be looking for the points to keep challenging for the top 7.

  • Correct score prediction: Southampton 2 – 1 Everton
  • Odds: 12/1

Watford vs Burnley

Kick-off: Week 23, Saturday 19th January, 15:00

Watford will really be enjoying this season and the win over Crystal Palace last time out took the club to 7th in the Premier League which if they can hold on, could be enough to see them in Europe next season. However, they will still know that is a long way away yet and this is another tough game in their journey to get there. Troy Deeney has started to fire again which is a terrifying sight for defences in the league.

Burnley looked in a lot of trouble just a few weeks ago but three wins on the bounce has seen them climb three points above the bottom three and up to 15th. On their day, Burnley are a very good side and showed that last season as they went on to finish 7th which was enough to get them into Europe, which is what their opponents will be looking for come to the end of the season.

Watford have been playing some very good football so far this season and with the big names in the team scoring again, we don’t think Burnley will have the resources to match then.

  • Correct score prediction: Watford 2 – 0 Burnley
  • Odds: 10/1

Arsenal vs Chelsea

Kick-off: Week 23, Saturday 19th January, 17:30

Arsenal have gone from 23 games unbeaten to two defeats in three matches. Defeats to Southampton and West Ham wouldn’t have been expected by anyone at the club and those defeats has seen Manchester United close to gap to 0 points, with just goal difference keeping the Gunners on top. They’ll be desperate to win this one to get them back on track and most importantly close the gap to three points on Chelsea in 4th place.

Like mentioned above, there are just six points separating these sides at this stage of the season which is not a lot and can easily increase/close. Chelsea know if they win this one, they will increase the gap between these two to 9 points which then would seem a big mountain to climb for Arsenal. Chelsea didn’t make it easy for themselves at home to Newcastle on Saturday evening but would have been happy to close out a 2-1 win.

Although Arsenal have been very good at home this season, we think Chelsea could cause an upset this weekend. The tactics of Sarri have worked wonders on many occasions already this season and we think that could prove again in this one.

  • Correct score prediction: Arsenal 1 – 2 Chelsea
  • Odds: 16/1

Huddersfield vs Manchester City

Kick-off: Week 23, Sunday 20th January, 13:30

Huddersfield are bottom of the Premier League, 10 points from safety and this week have lost their manager who has left his position at the club. Things don’t look great for the side who have won so many hearts during there time in the English top flight. Every match is a cup final for this side now and with Manchester City on the horizon, they will need to put on the game of there lives if they are to get anything.

Manchester City will be feeling a lot better about themselves after recent weeks which has seen them beat Liverpool which closed the gap to 4 points and completely dominate a tough opponent in Wolves on Monday night. They will be looking to make sure they get all three points as a minimum in this one and if they can, to get some more goals in the bag to improve their goal difference.

It would be nice to see Huddersfield get some kind of result from this one, but we just can’t see it. Manchester City are in a different class to Huddersfield and we think that’ll show when the two meet on Sunday afternoon.

  • Correct score prediction: Huddersfield 0 – 4 Manchester City
  • Odds: 22/1

Fulham vs Tottenham

Kick-off: Week 23, Sunday 20th January, 16:00

A London Derby to end the weekend as Fulham take on Tottenham at Craven Cottage. Things are looking bleak for Fulham who have slipped five points from safety in the Premier League and come into this one having lost both of there last two matches. Fulham have scored more than anyone else in the bottom four, but conceding 49 is a Premier League high and a problem which will need solving very soon if they are to have any chance of survival.

Tottenham will be looking for an instant response this weekend after the shock defeat at home to Manchester United on Sunday afternoon. It was a sloppy first half and a heroic goalkeeping display from David De Gea which was the difference in the match, but a win this weekend will get the side back into the right frame of mind going into the remainder of the campaign as they look to cement a Champions League place and potentially challenge for the league.

Fulham have struggled against last seasons top six all season and we expect exactly the same to happen in this one. Harry Kane and co will be looking for nothing short of three points from this one.

  • Correct score prediction: Fulham 0 – 2 Tottenham
  • Odds: 7/1
