Somewhat surprisingly Bayern were unable to find a way past a stubborn Shakhtar side in their midweek Champions League clash. To add to their woes Xabi Alonso was sent off and will miss the return fixture at the Allianz Arena in just over a fortnight’s time. The midfield maestro will however be available for this tie against Paderborn, who currently occupy 12th position and of greater concern lie just 2 points above the drop zone. I believe even the most pessimistic Bayern supporter will feel this should be a routine victory for the reigning champions and I’m backing them to win both halves.

PSG vs Toulouse
Despite overpowering Chelsea for much of the game, PSG had to settle for a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night. Laurent Blanc’s side were a joy to watch and played with a certain vigour which has been lacking in their domestic games. The Parisians remain just a point off Lyon in top spot despite an indifferent run of form. A win at the Parc des Princes is essential for PSG in order to keep up with their title rivals but Toulouse are also becoming increasingly desperate for points as they are edging ever closer to the relegation zone.

Elche vs Real Madrid
Despite boasting an inhumane goalscoring record, the world player of the year has come into some criticism for being a ‘goal-obsessed’ player, with some pundits even suggesting that the club should let him move on. I personally find it absurd to criticise a player who has performed at an incredible level week in week out for the best part of his Real Madrid career. Elche welcome the European champions on Sunday night and will be looking to cause an upset following two wins in their last two matches. Real Madrid overcame Schalke in midweek to put them in good shape to defend their title for one more round, and Elche will be looking to capitalise on any form of fatigue. However, Carlo Ancelotti has the experience that his side do not let their quality drop as they look to maintain their lead in the title race. I’m expecting a tight affair, with Elche putting up a good fight, but Real Madrid will triumph in the end.

Barcelona vs Malaga
Malaga’s indifferent form comes at a bad time, as they travel to the Nou camp Barcelona side who look phenomenal with their attacking trio of Messi, Neymar and Suarez. They brushed Levante aside last week, with the goal of the week going to Luis Suarez who pulled off a stunning overhead kick. Atletico Madrid vs Almeria
Football is a fascinating game, I find it hard to believe that the same side who beat Real Madrid 4-0 failed to even trouble Celta Vigo as their title defence suffered a terrible blow. Critically, they missed the likes of Turan in their side, but Diego Simeone will still be utterly disappointed by his players. However, I do not think that he lets his side dwell on any disappointing results, and they will be back in full force against Almeria. However, Almeria go to the Vincente Calderon in good form, meaning that any complacency shown by the champions will be capitalised on. I expect Atletico Madrid to be back to their best, displaying an efficient performance to win comfortably.
