Fans of Luis Suarez are set to be disappointed by his absence from the tournament. All Copa America predictions indicate that the Uruguay striker is almost certain not to participate at this year’s event because he is still serving a ban and the biting incident at last year’s World Cup.
If Uruguay do progress then Suarez’s ban will expire just before the end of the tournament. This means that Suarez technically could play at the end of the event, however his manager has decided not to name him in the squad, as he feels it would be a distraction from the rest of the team and would negatively impact on the side’s performance.
This is a bold move by the manager as Suarez is currently one of the most in-form strikers in the world but he unfortunately carries with him the baggage of a media circus that would detract from the focus of the rest of the squad. It seems shocking not to want Suarez on the team but his presence could reduce the chances of his team progressing to the stage where he could play.
Uruguay legend Gus Poyet stated in a recent interview that “the team is the most important thing” and this appears to be the philosophy of the entire squad, including the manager. This will give a chance to the other big names in the team to stake their claim as the main attacking threat for Uruguay.
Players such as Cavani, will have to step and fill the shoes of Luis Suarez. Especially considering that the next game that Uruguay will play in is against Argentina, a team they knocked in the 2011 tournament, who will be desperate for revenge as well as securing the right to progress in the competition.
