Get in on the Serie A action – Week 2
Benevento vs Bologna
Bologna showed a good side last week vs Torino and held their nerve against a determined Granata side that is poised to place 6th or 7th this season. Benevento on the other hand took the lead against Sampdoria only to succumb to a stronger home side and lose 2-1 in the end. These two have never met head to head at any competitive level. We prefer Bologna’s attacking players in this one.
Genoa vs Juventus
Juventus have had a great start to their Serie A campaign, completely flattening Cagliari in a convincing 3-0 win at home. Genoa had a boring draw against Sassuolo and either side couldn’t finish off their actions. There hasn’t been a draw in this fixture since 2013 and we don’t think this will be any different. Allegri will field his best side and probably make a slight change from last Saturday’s game. Juric will keep his side intact. Genoa have upset Juve before on their home ground but there are no mid-week distractions or squad rotations in this one so a convincing win for Juventus is lined up.
Roma vs Inter
Match of the week at the Olimpico on Saturday night. A Roma side that has apparently weakened since the summer transfers have gone through and a strengthened Inter side with Roma’s ex coach. A lot has changed in terms of squad for Inter. Spalletti has tried to give them an attacking mentality and has sought to patch the defensive blunders and weaknesses that Inter has been the victim of in the last 5 years. Roma, at home, are a formidable side and their record at home against Inter in the Serie A is quite good. Roma have managed to average 2 goals against Inter at home and have won 3 of the last 3 with the other 3 being draw games.
Torino vs Sassuolo
Both teams coming off disappointing draws in the first week. Both could have done better and will be hoping to do so in this fixture. Torino are very strong at home and are an attacking side with Ljajic and Bellotti. No major injuries since last week. Mihajlovic will be firing up his squad for this one.
AC Milan vs Cagliari
Milan showed us a good attacking mindset in their previous fixtures this year. Cagliari are coming off a bashing against Juventus and are away again this weekend (2 away starts). We don’t see much happening for Cagliari in this one. Milan will be with a full squad and we expect them to be winners in this one, quite convincingly.
Chievo vs Lazio
Not as easy a fixture to predict as you might think. Chievo have a good team and are strong at home. Their head to head vs Lazio is also something they are quite proud of. Lazio do not fare well at this stadium and the last win came 3 years ago. Lazio have the stronger team but after their great showing against Juventus in the super cup, they disappointed with a home draw against SPAL without goals.
Crotone vs Verona
Crotone are poor and will miss their starting defender (red card last week through VAR). Verona looked like a decent side against Napoli but their away game is not always a good story. Verona still have the stronger side and upfront they can score more.
Fiorentina vs Sampdoria
Fiorentina got a real bashing last week in the opener against Inter. They return home but we are still not convinced about their current squad. Chiesa will be back from suspension and Simeone will hope to get his first goal. Sampdoria had a good comeback win last weekend and will hope to build on confidence in this one. A few injuries on their team but they still gave a great show.
Napoli vs Atalanta
Napoli return to base after a good win against Nice in the champions league. They’ve had a busy 2 weeks but always seem to have lots of energy and are a scoring juggernaut. Atalanta we unlucky not to get at least a point at home against Roma. Hysaj will miss this one because of a red card against Verona last week. This is Napoli’s first home game in Serie A this season and they will not want to disappoint their fans. Atalanta have now solved the Spinazzola issue but I doubt he will be part of this match.
SPAL vs Udinese
Not an exciting encounter at all. SPAL managed a decent draw against Lazio away next week and meet Udinese at home this weekend. Udinese lost to Chievo at home last weekend and are looking to build on that and get better. No previous h2h encounters on this one and we think the away team is better and can snatch a win
Massimo’s Serie A predictions are BACK !!!
Juventus vs Cagliari prediction
League title current holders Juventus open their 7th league title defense against Cagliari on Saturday. The early Serie A kick off will kick start the new Serie A season at the newly names Allianz Stadium (previously Juventus Stadium). This is a stronghold for a Juve side that is desperate to make a statement after an embarassing last minute goal against Lazio in the Italian super cup last weekend. No major injuries for Juventus in this one and neither for Cagliari. The last 5 games between these two resulted in many goals and this one will not be any different. Watch out for Juventus’ new signings Douglas Costa and Bernardeschi as these two aim to impress their home crowd on their debut.
Verona vs Napoli prediction
Fresh from a fantastic showing in the Champions League playoff on Wednesday, in-form Napoli start their Serie A campaign against minnows Verona at the Stadio Bentegodi. Some injuries for Verona mean that they already start worse off than if they were 100% healthy. This is really going to be an uphill struggle for them. This is the beginning of the season so Napoli would not even be fatigued after Wednesday’s game.
Atalanta vs Roma prediction
Tough opening fixture for both teams here with Champions league place aspiring Roma coming off a good summer. Di Francesco replacing outgoing Luciano Spalletti and also big time players like Salah and Rudiger have left the club. Roma having replaced some good players with young promising players. They also renewed Naingolan’s contract which is also a good step in the right direction for the Roman side. Atalanta remain fairly competitive for 6th / 7th place as they lost two key players in midfield (Kessie and Conti – also Spinazzola soon). Roma will be without their attacking midfielder El Sharaawy as well as their new promising signing, Luca Pellegrini.
Bologna vs Torino prediction
Torino are expected to have a fairly good campaign this season and contend for a Europa League placing. With coach Mihajlovic in his 2nd term at the club, after offloading Benassi, Maksimovic and Bruno Peres. Torino look to start getting the goals here with their super striker upfront, Bellotti. Torino also have a good record of scoring against Bologna and therefore we see them take this one.
Crotone vs AC Milan prediction
This new Milan side will be without their iconic president Silvio Berlusconi for the first time in over 20 years. I am sure this will be a strange feeling for Milan fans in general but i am sure they are really happy with their flying start in the Europa League qualifiers this week. This team will take some time to come together as they have at least 8 new players in their first 11. However it is looking good for Milan this season and they are hoping to finish in the Top 3.
Inter vs Fiorentina prediction
What a summer Inter had on the transfer market ! They’ve made all the right moves. They’ve gotten a great coach in Luciano Spalletti. Also they’ve covered their weakest positions in the full backs and have also added assist men for their main hitman Icardi. Fiorentina on the other hand went through the opposite type of summer. They have lost their playmaker Borja Valero (to Inter), Ilicic and Mattias Vecino but have acquired Benassi from Torino and Simeone from Genoa. Pioli, the Fiorentina coach will meet his ex-club and will definitely want revenge. Attacking style football in this opener at San Siro.
Lazio vs Spal prediction
Lazio had a cracker of a start to the season last Sunday, beating Juventus 3-2 with a last gasp winner. The win was deserved and they were the better team on the day. Spal come into this season as the complete underdogs and favourite to relegate after this season. Lazio have a formidable attacking formation and can hurt on the counter. Expecting lots of goals in this one.
Atalanta vs Chievo
Atalanta are still in with a chance of finishing 4th this season after narrowly beating struggling side Empoli while Chievo were outplayed on their home soil by a stronger Roma side in an eight goal thriller. I predict Gasperini’s men will seal off a superb season with a win.
Bologna vs Juventus
As expected Bologna stood little chance at the San Siro as they were easily beaten by Milan while Juventus secured their second trophy in less then a week following their victory over Crotone to make it 6 Italian Championships on the trot. I am backing the visitors to win this.
Cagliari vs Milan
Sardinian side Cagliari retained their Serie A status but will definitely see room for improvement next term while Milan will be relatively pleased with their campaign considering their limited budget last summer. The Rossoneri will look forward to the summer transfer market following the takeover of a Chinese consortium who have promised big spending.
Crotone vs Lazio
As expected Crotone were easily beaten at the San Siro by a superior Milan side while Lazio self-imploded at the Olimpico and now risk mssing out of the much coveted 4th place finish, after they ended the game with nine-men and lost to Inter 1-3. It’s do or die for the home side however I am backing Lazio to bounce back.
Fiorentina vs Pescara
Saturday night was a perfect example of how far behind Fiorentina are from the big boys after they were downed 4-1 in Naples. Pescara’s stint in the Serie A didn’t last long after a dismal season and I am backing them to lose in Florence before their return to the lower divisions.
Inter vs Udinese
Inter won their first game in over 2 months in a unexpected victory at the Olimpico while Udinese were held at home by Sampdoria in what was quite a drab affair. Considering the turmoil currently within the Nerazzurri ranks and the lack of quality within the Udine side I reckon a draw is on the cards.
Palermo vs Empoli
Most Serie A fans will undoubtedly miss Sicilian side Palermo next season, perhaps not for their quality, something they have lacked in their squad for over 5 years now, but the fantastic atmosphere at the Renzo Barbera. Empoli are still not safe from the drop a will need to secure all three points in order to guarantee their safety. I am backing another draw.
Roma vs Genoa
Roma have arguably had one of their best domestic seasons in recent history pushing Juventus right down to the penultimate round of games and will hope that a few reinforcements over the summer will be enough to win the Scudetto next season. Genoa’s have been extremely inconsistent this term and despite beating the likes of Milan and Juventus have dropped far too many points and will finish the season in 16th place.
Sampdoria vs Napoli
Sampdoria played out a 1-1 draw at Udine to pretty much secure their mid-table position in the standings while Napoli were superb as they comfortably beat Fiorentina 4-1 to keep the pressure on second place Roma. I am backing Sarri’s men to win this.
Torino vs Sassuolo
Only a handful of points separates these two sides who have both had disappointing campaigns when compared to their pre-season ambitions. I am backing Il Toro to win since they have that little bit of extra quality in their side.
Chievo vs Roma
As expected Chievo did just enough to hold out for a draw in Sampdoria while Roma were superb as they downed league leaders 3-1 at the Olimpico in what was a great game of football. I reckon the visitors can win this.
Napoli vs Fiorentina
Napoli kept chase with second place Roma following their comfortable 0-5 win in Turin and also secured Champions League for next season. Fiorentina were rewarded for their determination with a hard earned victory over high flying Lazio to climb up to 7th place. Home win expected for the home side.
Milan vs Bologna
Despite playing second fiddle for most of the encounter Milan fought back late on and snatched an important point in Atalanta as they attempt to secure a Europa League spot. Bologna added more misery to relegated side Pescara with a 3-1 win. Montella’s side should win this.
Empoli vs Atalanta
Empoli missed the perfect chance to add another point to their name but front man Pucciarelli missed a crucial penalty as his side eventually lost 3-2 despite an attempt at a late comeback. Atalanta failed to make the most of their chances and were punished late one when Milan found a late equaliser. I am backing the visitors to win this.
Genoa vs Torino
Both sides have had disappointing campaigns considering their pre-season expectations with Genoa sitting just two points above the bottom three, while Torino are most likely going to finish 9th this term. I predict that both sides will settle for a draw.
Juventus vs Crotone
Despite being soundly beaten at the Olimpico last weekend, slightly delaying their celebration plans, Juventus bounced back by winning the first of three trophies in what they hope will be a historic treble on Wednesday night after beating Lazio in the Coppa Italia final. Crotone’s recent resurgence might all be in vain as they are likely to lose in Turin and should other results not go their way then they will be the final side to be relegated from the Serie A.
Sassuolo vs Cagliari
Sassuolo dumped further misery onto Inter as they beat the Nerazzurri 1-2 at the San Siro while Cagliari were close to squandering a three goal lead against Empoli but managed to hold on by the skin of their teeth to win 3-2. Just one point separates these two sides and that is why I am going for a draw.
Udinese vs Sampdoria
Both these sides have had pretty average seasons as they occupy 11th and 10th place in the standings respectively and will hope to make the necessary reinforcements over the summer to try and secure Europa League football. Just three points separate these two sides in the Serie A standings and hence I am backing another draw.
Lazio vs Inter
Despite losing in the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday night Lazio can still look back at this season with great pride as they look set to finish 4th, quite an achievement considering their limited transfer budget. Inter’s season has gone down the drain as they seem to have self-disintegrated with coach Pioli being sacked in recent weeks and they have now not won a league game in almost two months. Home win expected.
Pescara vs Palermo
Monday night sees a pretty irrelevant game take place with both sides already relegated and their final placing in the league already set. Do not expect a thrilling encounter as I reckon both sets of players will be pretty demoralised.
Fiorentina vs Lazio
Both sides were involved in very exciting games last weekend, with multiple goals, cards and talking points. La Viola came from behind after playing the last quarter of the game with ten-men while Lazio beat a stubborn Sampdoria side 7-3 in what was a memorable encounter. Considering the visitor’s form, I am backing them to win this.
Atalanta vs Milan
Despite a fine run of form, Atalanta were held on their travels to Udine however a win over the Rossoneri on Saturday night will confirm their 5th place finish after a superb season for Gasperini’s squad. Milan were comfortably beaten at the San Siro by a stronger Roma side and the fans will eagerly be awaiting the summer transfer window when they should have healthy budget to replenish their ranks following the takeover of the club by a Chinese billionaire. Home win expected.
Inter vs Sassuolo
Inter have literally imploded over the last month, with their latest defeat coming in Genoa, with rumours in Milan suggesting that Pioli will be shown the door come the end of May. Sassuolo threw away a great chance to snatch three points over Fiorentina only to be pegged back by a late Bernardeschi strike. I am backing Inter to win this.
Bologna vs Pescara
Despite securing Serie A football last season, Bologna know that they have a lot of cracks to mend this summer if they hope to avoid a relegation scrap next year. Pescara were undoubtedly Serie A’s weakest side this term, winning just two games and frankly do not deserve to play in the Italian top flight. Home win expected.
Cagliari vs Empoli
As expected, Cagliari were comfortably beaten on their travels to Naples on Saturday afternoon while Empoli dug deep to beat Bologna and maintain a four point gap over Crotone who are breathing down their necks in the fight for survival. I predict a draw.
Crotone vs Udinese
Crotone have now collected more points in the past few weeks than the previous 6 months and are still in with a fighting chance of survival. Udinese look to finish in a mid-table position and will definitely strengthen key positions in their squad in order to better their position in the Serie A next season. I am backing a home win.
Palermo vs Genoa
Palermo have officially been relegated back down to the Serie B after only managing to secure a point in Chievo in what has been a pretty disappointing season for the Sicilians. Genoa have been extremely inconsistent this term and still need to secure four points to ensure their safety. I expect a bore draw.
Sampdoria vs Chievo
Sampdoria were pummelled on their travels to Lazio in a ten goal thriller, playing for over 70 minutes with ten men and finishing the game 7-3. Chievo were held by Crotone as their season continues on a downward spiral after such an encouraging start. Considering just four points separates these two sides I predict a draw.
Torino vs Napoli
Torino were very close to a historic win at the Juventus Stadium on Saturday night only for star front man Higuain to break Il Toro’s heart with the game ending 1-1. Napoli maintained the pressure on second place Roma with a comfortable 3-1 win over Cagliari. Close one too call but I reckon the visitors can win this.
Roma vs Juventus
Sunday night sees the clash between Italy’s two top sides, with just a point for Juve enough for them to win their sixth consecutive Scudetto. You can be sure the Romans will go all out to delay the Old Lady’s party however I reckon Allegri’s will do just enough to snatch a point and kick off the celebrations, in what would round up a fantastic week for Juventus, after they qualified for the Champions League final several days ago.
Napoli vs Cagliari
A defensive blunder gifted Napoli with the only goal of the game as they beat Inter 0-1 at the San Siro to move to just a point below second place Roma. Cagliari maintained their mid-table position after beating bottom side Pescara however I believe they stand little chance of success in Naples.
Juventus vs Torino
Despite being held in Atalanta last weekend Juventus increased their lead in the Serie A to nine points meaning that four more points in these last four games will secure their sixth consecutive Scudetto. Torino’s inconsistent season continued as they were held at home by Sampdoria. Home win expected.
Udinese vs Atalanta
Udinese are another side who have struggled to maintain a positive run of form this season and their latest 4-0 loss to Bologna is testament of this. Atalanta on the otherhand are having one of their best seasons in recent history as they held Juventus to a 2-2 draw in what was an exciting game of football to move five points clear in 5th place and all but secure Europa League football. I predict a score draw.
Chievo vs Palermo
Chievo came from behind to beat Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris while Palermo fought hard and downed Fiorentina on their home soil. It might be little too late for the Sicilians who have been struggling all season and are still 10 points from safety with just four games to do. Home win expected.
Empoli vs Bologna
Floating just four points above the relegation zone Empoli would have thought they were home and dry several weeks ago only for Crotone to produce a series of fine results and clamber up the standings and give themselves a fighting chance of survival. Bologna’s top performance of the season came last Sunday when they beat Udinese 4-0 with front man Destro grabbing a brace. I predict a score draw.
Genoa vs Inter
Genoa have left themselves completely exposed now and sit just five points above 18th place Crotone, the side from Liguria under-performing all season bar a couple of surprise victories of Milan and Juventus. Inter’s season has gone up in smoke after such an impressive recovery following the appointment of Pioli last November, and now haven’t won a game since mid-March. I expect a draw.
Lazio vs Sampdoria
After a superb season Lazio have added another scalp to their trophy cabinet after beating rivals Roma on Sunday afternoon in what was a hotly contested game of football at the Olimpico. After a pretty inconsistent season Sampdoria’s recent form has marginally improved meaning that they will most likely finish among the top half of the table. Home win expected.
Pescara vs Crotone
After steadily climbing up the table in recent weeks, snatching points off the likes of Inter and Milan, Crotone will see this as a golden opportunity to add a further three points to their name when they play Pescara who have almost no chance of survival. I am backing the visitors to win this.
Sassuolo vs Fiorentina
Both sides are having seasons to forget when compared to their last campaigns. Sassuolo sit in 14th place after finishing 6th last season while Fiorentina have also been punished for their inconsistent performances and will most likely not qualify for the Europa League next September. Tough one to call but I’m going for a draw.
Milan vs Roma
Despite not setting the world on fire Milan can be pretty pleased with their season to date, considering their limited transfer budget they stand a good chance of finishing 6th and will hope for much needed investment over the summer following the takeover by a Chinese consortium. Roma will be kicking themselves after failing to take their chances and also win when it counts, both in Serie A and Champions League, and will end another season empty handed. I expect an entertaining game at the San Siro which will end in a draw.
Atalanta vs Juventus
Atalanta’s dream season continued as they beat Bologna on Saturday afternoon to remain in 5th place and look likely to securing Europa League football next term. Juventus took another step towards their 6th consecutive Scudetto with a comfortable 4-0 win over Genoa in which Allegri’s men were superb. I am backing the home side to hold out for a draw.
Torino vs Sampdoria
Torino fans would have expected better from their team this season considering the strength in their ranks, however coach Mihajlovic has a young side to build on. Despite young front man Schick scoring a superb goal, Sampdoria were unable to keep the backdoor shut and conceded two Crotone goals to lose 1-2. Home win expected.
Roma vs Lazio
Sunday’s early afternoon fixture sees one of two show stopping encounters in Gameweek 34, with the Roman derby taking centre stage. Spalletti’s men will feel that they did not quite reach their pre-season objective and despite all but securing second place, even the most ardent Roma supporter will have to admit that they are still second best to Juventus. Lazio on the otherhand have probably surpassed everyone’s expectations as they sit in 4th place and can definitely be proud of their season to date. I am backing the Giallorossi to win this.
Bologna vs Udinese
Eight points separate these two sides in what has been a season to forget for both of them. Despite all but securing their Serie A status for next season Bologna will have to up their game in order to avoid a relegation scrap next season, while Udinese will also be aiming to improve on their mid-table finish. I predict a score draw.
Cagliari vs Pescara
Both sides lost their respective fixtures last weekend, with the Sardinians losing out in Udine whilst Pescara were pummelled 1-4 at home by Roma and it is now pretty much impossible for them to survive the drop to Serie B. Home win expected.
Crotone vs Milan
It might be a little to late for Crotone who have collected almost as many points in the past three weeks as they did over the entire season. The Southerners are still five points from safety and time is running out. Milan were surprisingly beaten at home to 17th place Empoli but I am backing them to win on Sunday.
Empoli vs Sassuolo
Empoli were rewarded for their brave display with a historic win at the San Siro over the Rossoneri maintaining their five point breathing room over the bottom three. Sassuolo were very close to securing a historic result of their own, only for Napoli to bounce back and snatch a point. I predict a close game which will end in a draw.
Genoa vs Chievo
Genoa have had an extremely disappointing season, despite a few impressive wins over some of Serie A’s big guns they have paid for their inconsistency and sit 16th in the standings. Chievo are in a similar situation and will be grateful for their good run of form earlier on in the season which has spared them from any relegation scraps. Considering both these sides form, I expect a bore draw.
Palermo vs Fiorentina
Like Pescara, Palermo have been extremely poor this season and do not deserve to remain in the Serie A, winning just three games all season. Fiorentina came from behind to win by the odd goal in nine over Inter in what was an extremely entertaining game of football. Away win expected.
Inter vs Napoli
Despite Icardi grabbing his second hat trick in two months his side still left Florence empty handed as Inter’s season seems to be ending in disaster, having not won a game out of their last five. Despite most likely finishing third, Napoli will also be disappointed with their season, having fallen out of the title race fairly on. Sarri’s men still lack they killer instinct to compete with Juventus but I predict their quality will see them through on Sunday evening.
Atalanta vs Bologna
Atalanta’s determined performance was rewarded as they snatched a cheeky point at the Olimpico to frustrate Spallett’s side and all but hand the title to Juventus. As expected Bologna were held in Sicily in what was a pretty boring game. The home side should have no problem winning this.
Fiorentina vs Inter
Both these sides are having a season to forgot considering the high expectations last September. La Viola sit in 8th place, four points below Inter who visit Florence fresh from a heated draw agaisnt rivals Milan in which Pioli’s men conceded the equaliser in the 97th minute. The home side will still be trying to figure out how they lost to lowly Empoli last Saturday. I predict a close encounter which will end in a draw.
Sassuolo vs Napoli
Sassuolo’s will be counting their lucky stars as they beat a Sampdoria side who had more than the lion’s share of chances last weekend. Napoli all but secured their Champions League football next season following a 3-0 win over Udinese to move 9 points clear of 4th place Lazio. I am backing Sarri’s men to win in the early Sunday afternoon kick-off.
Milan vs Empoli
Milan left it very late to frustrate Inter and secure a point in what was a great game of football to remain two points above their derby rivals. Empoli provided one of the shock results of Gameweek 32 as they scored a late penalty to win in Florence and move five points clear of the bottom three. The home side should have no problem winning this.
Chievo vs Torino
Chievo suffered probably their most embarrassing loss of the season in Sardinia as they conceded four unanswered goal to continue sliding down the table. Torino were left frustrated on Saturday afternoon when they conceded late on to drop two vital points against 18th place Crotone. Considering both sides recent form, I reckon a draw is the most likely outcome.
Lazio vs Palermo
Not for the first time this season Lazio snatched a point at the death to draw 2-2, in what was a great game of football at the Luigi Ferraris. Palermo couldn’t take their chances, despite playing for most of the game against ten-men, meaning the Sicilians are now 10 points from safety and all but destined for Serie B. Home win expected.
Sampdoria vs Crotone
Despite being the better side on the day, Sampdoria failed to make their chances count and were eventually beaten 2-1 in Sassuolo. Crotone were rewarded for their determination as they scored late on in Turin to snatch a point and maintain a glimmer of hope of surviving in the Serie A. I am backing the visitors to hold out for a draw.
Udinese vs Cagliari
Udinese were completely swept away by a much better Napoli side while Cagliari were ruthless when they knocked four past a hapless Chievo on Saturday afternoon. I predict an exciting score draw.
Juventus vs Genoa
Juventus took a massive step towards their sixth consecutive Scudetto on Saturday by comfortably beating Pescara while closest rivals dropped two points meaning Allegri’s men are now eight points clear with just six games to go. Genoa failed to kill the game off and were punished by a alte Luis Alberto equaliser. Home win for the Old Lady.
Pescara vs Roma
Pescara languish at the very bottom of the Serie A with little hope in site, 12 points from safety as they take on a far superior Roma side in what I expect will be a one sided affair. Away win expected.
Inter vs Milan
Pioli’s honeymoon period seems well over now as his side lost to struggling side Crotone having dropped 8 points our of the last 9. Milan on the other hand have hit the right form just before the derby as they knocked four past a hapless Palermo on Sunday afternoon. I predict a heated game at the San Siro which will end in a draw.
Cagliari vs Chievo
Despite taking an early lead, Cagliari were unable to hold off a rampant Torino side as they eventually lost 2-3. Chievo stood little chance during their Saturday night visit to the Juventus Stadium as they were beaten 2-0 by a far superior Juve side. I expect a close game which will end in a draw.
Fiorentina vs Empoli
Fiorentina played out an exciting 2-2 draw in Sampdoria while Empoli held bottom side Pescara to a 1-1 draw but are now just three points above the bottom three, meaning they have their work cut out for them these next two months if they are to survive Serie A. Home win expected.
Genoa vs Lazio
Genoa were completely outplayed on their travels to Udinese losing 3-0 as their inconsistent season continued. Despite Lazio’s recent good form the difference in class was clear as they swept aside by a far stronger Napoli side to remain in 4th place. I expect the visitors to bounce back.
Palermo vs Bologna
Considering Palermo’s form all season the Sicilians will be extremely to survive the drop come May, their most recent defeat coming at the San Siro, a 4-0 drubbing. Bologna suffered a drubbing of their own at the hands of Roma, however despite the latest defeat still sit 14 points clear of the bottom three and will be confident of staying in the Serie A this season. I reckon the home side can hold out for a point.
Pescara vs Juventus
Drifting nine points from safety only a miraculous run of games can save Pescara now and it’s unlikely to start when reigning champions Juventus visit on Sunday afternoon. Comfortable home win expected.
Roma vs Atalanta
Roma maintained the pressure on league leaders Juventus by comfortably beating mid-table side Bologn, even though many would suspect it’s too little too late for Spalletti’s men. Atalanta’s missed their chance to climb up to 4th but were held at home by Sassuolo. This is a must win for Roma and I am backing them to win it.
Torino vs Crotone
Torino will look back at this season knowing that a slightly better run of form would have seen them qualify for Europa League football, instead they are most likely to finish in a mid-table position. Crotone pulled off the shock result of Gameweek 31 by scoring two goals in four minutes and holding out for a historic win over Inter and also giving themselves a glimpse of survival as they sit just three points to safety. Home win expected.
Sassuolo vs Sampdoria
Both these sides played out respective draws against arguably stronger opponents last weekend, in what has been a pretty poor season for the home side compared to recent seasons. La Samp on the otherhand sit 9th in the standings and will hope to build on this season and challenge for a Europa League place next season. Score draw expected.
Napoli vs Udinese
Napoli all but secured Champions League football for next season with an impressive 0-3 win over Lazio at the Olimpico while Udinese thrashed Genoa at home bu the same scoreline. I can only see one winner on Sunday evening.
Empoli vs Pescara
Empoli were comfortably beaten by a superior Roma side losing 2-0 at the Olimpico while Pescara did just enough to hold Milan for a point however remain 9 points from safety. Time is running out for the visitors and I reckon they will snatch a point on Saturday afternoon.
Atalanta vs Sassuolo
Atalanta we firing on all cylinders on Sunday afternoon as they knocked five past a hapless Genoa side to move up to 5th in the standings. Sassuolo succumbed to the pressure applied by Lazio very late on to lose 1-2 and remain in 15th place. I am backing the home side to continue with their fantastic run of form.
Juventus vs Chievo
Despite being far from perfect and arguably the second best side on Sunday evening Juventus did just enough to leave Naples with a crucial point and still sit 6 points above second place Roma. Chievo’s inconsistent season continued as they were beaten at home by struggling Crotone. Juve to take another important step towards their sixth consecutive Scudetto on Saturday night.
Sampdoria vs Fiorentina
Sampdoria rode their luck and took their chances to pull off a suprise victory at the San Siro over a wasteful Inter side with veteran front man Quagliarella scoring a late penalty. Fiorentina made easy work of a poor Bologna squad and despite the slim 1-0 scoreline were always in control of the match. I predict a close game which will end all square.
Milan vs Palermo
Milan were far from perfect last weekend as they were held on their travels to Pescara, with star goalkeeper Donnaruma failing to control a simple back-pass and gifting the homeside with an early goal. The home side have far more problems to worry about as they were beaten in Sicily by Cagliari and remain seven points from safety. Home win expected .
Bologna vs Roma
Bologna were second best last weekend when they made the short journey to Florence and left empty handed. Roma, despite being far from perfect, made sure they secured all three points with a comfortable 2-0 win over Empoli to close the gap on league leaders Juventus to six points. I am backing Spalletti’s men to win on Sunday.
Cagliari vs Torino
Cagliari came out on top in the battle of the islanders as they outplayed a weak Palermo side to win 1-3. Torino came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw over Udinese in Turin in what has been a pretty inconsistent season for Mihajlovic’s side. I expect a close encounter which will end in a draw.
Crotone vs Inter
The outcome of each sides’ respective results last weekend was quite surprising to say the least as Crotone won just their fourth game of the season in Chievo while Inter suffered their first unexpected defeat under Pioli’s tenure, losing 1-2 at the San Siro against Sampdoria, despite dominating for most of the encounter. I am backing the visitors to bounce back.
Udinese vs Genoa
Despite taking an early two goal lead, Udinese lacked the experience to hold Torino and had to settle for a point. Genoa were extremely poor on Sunday afternoon as they were swept aside by a rampant Atalanta, meaning the Ligurian’s now sit in 16th place and coach Mandorlini will probably be shown the door come May. I expect a home win.
Lazio vs Napoli
Lazio’s impressive run of form continued as their pressure paid off when they scored a late winner in Sassuolo, one of many late winners in recent weeks meaning they are now just four points below third place Napoli. The visitors were superb, if wasteful, on Sunday evening as they applied real pressure on Juventus’ rearguard however failed to make their chances count. I am backing Sarri’s men this Sunday.
