World Cup 2014 – Final

Germany Vs Argentina

The 2014 FIFA World Cup has finally arrived. It’s been a long road for both these sides, who thoroughly deserve their spot in the biggest sporting game in the world. Argentina will have a huge support for the final and will be drooling at the prospect of being crowned champions at the Maracana. La Albiceleste were my pre-tournament favourites however, we haven’t seen a top class performance from them as of yet. Of course any team that possesses Lionel Messi can never be written off but they struggled to break down a stubborn Dutch side and I wonder how much that game will have taken out of the South Americans.

Germany cruised through their semi-final and crucially had an extra day to recover ahead of Sunday’s final. I do think though that everybody’s judgement may be slightly clouded in light of that emphatic win against Brazil and it will be an extremely close match. Joachim Low is fortunate enough to have a fully fit side to choose from and is expected to feature the same line-up he did against Brazil, with veteran Miroslav Klose linking up with Thomas Muller up top.
I’m backing the Germans to end their drought for World Cup glory and edge past Argentina in Rio.

Prediction 2-1

World Cup 2014 – Play-Off

Brazil Vs Netherlands

This is the game that nobody wants to be apart of and just prolongs the World Cup heart ache for both sides. Dutch boss Louis van Gaal has complained about this fixture and to be honest I think he will play his fringe players against the host nation, with the likes of Robben and Van Persie being left out altogether.

Brazil meanwhile, suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in World Cup history which will leave a sour taste in Brazilians’ mouths for many years to come. Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will still be under pressure to get a result here in Brasilia however and it will be interesting to see if he opts to play skipper Thiago Silva for this game.

World Cup 2014 – Semi-Finals

Netherlands Vs Argentina

A place in the World Cup final is up for grabs when these two nations face off in Sao Paolo. The Netherlands began the tournament with a bang but have struggled to reproduce that form in the knock out stages and looked a little jaded against Costa Rica. Louis van Gaal has been praised by the media following his inspired substitution in the quarter-final and it will be interesting to see whether he starts with Jasper Cillessen or penalty hero Tim Krul against Argentina.

La Albiceleste are now the slight favourites to lift the trophy in Rio, however, they will need to improve substantially if they are to be victorious against the Dutch. Lionel Messi has been phenomenal for Alejandro Sabella’s team and he must maintain his stunning form if he is to follow in the foot steps of Diego Maradona and carry his side into a World Cup final.

The chance to play Brazil in the final at the Maracana is a huge incentive for the Argentines and I think they will edge it in Sao Paolo.

World Cup 2014 – Semi-Finals

Brazil Vs Germany

Germany are the only remaining obstacle the host nation will need to overcome in order to secure a dream final at the Maracana. However, the Selecao have been dealt a huge double blow ahead of this crunch game in Belo Horizonte, with the inspirational Neymar and Thiago Silva both ruled out of this World Cup semi-final.

The Brazilians delivered a much-improved performance against Colombia and finally showed the world what they are capable of with some slick attacking football. Funnily enough, I feel that Neymar’s absence may work in Brazil’s favour for this tie, as the weight of expectation of the home fans has been somewhat minimised.

Joachim Low’s side meanwhile, gave a typical German performance against the French. They were not spectacular but efficient and looked extremely solid at the back. In Muller and Klose, Germany possess two real goal scorers who have the quality to really hurt a weakened Brazilian back line.

Brazil will undoubtedly feel the absence of their star duo but I think that their home support will get them through this game in Rio.

World Cup 2014 – Quarter-Finals

Argentina Vs Belgium

Both these teams needed extra-time to get past supposedly lesser opposition in their last 16 ties and they will need to up their games drastically in Brasilia.

La Albiceleste have not found life easy in Brazil despite a plethora of attacking talent. The foursome of Higuain, Lavezzi, Di Maria and Messi have failed to reproduce the form they displayed in qualifying but in the last 30 minutes or so against Switzerland we saw glimpses of what they can do.

Like Argentina, Marc Wilmots’ Belgium are yet to hit top form this World Cup but as we saw against the Americans they have got the personnel on the bench who can change the game for them.

I’m going for a narrow Argentina win here, possibly after extra-time.

Prediction 2-1

Netherlands Vs Costa Rica

The Oranje struggled more than expected against Mexico in their previous match and were only victorious thanks to a last gasp Huntelaar penalty. Louis van Gaal’s side look very good going forward but remain vulnerable at the back and had Mexico attacked them rather sat back, after taking the lead, I think they could have scored a few more.

Costa Rica played for an hour with 10 men against Greece and I wonder how much that game has taken out of them. La Sele have been bold throughout the tournament and if they play their own attacking game in Salvador they have the pace to hurt the Dutch back line.

World Cup 2014 – Quarter-Finals

France Vs Germany

The Maracana plays host to this mouth-watering tie between these two European giants.

The Germans have looked a little lacklustre since their opening day mauling of Portugal and struggled once more against minnows Algeria. If it weren’t for Manuel Neuer, who was almost playing as a centre half, Joachim Low’s side would already be on the plane home. Following their impressive opening games, Les Bleus have been cast amongst the tournament favourites but they remain an extremely inexperienced team in comparison to Germany.

I just can’t choose between these two nations and I think a penalty shoot-out will settle this one … With the Germans edging it!

Prediction 1-1 (Germany to win on penalties)

Brazil Vs Colombia

Two of the remaining three South American nations in the competition face off in Fortaleza for a spot in the semi-finals. Brazil’s unconvincing performances this summer continued against Chile and they were only able to overcome their neighbours courtesy of a penalty shoot-out.

For me Colombia have looked like the best side in the World Cup so far. They have scored plenty of goals and play attractive football and in James Rodriguez have arguably the player of the tournament up until now. I tipped him to shine a few weeks ago and I’m glad he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves, fantastic player!

This is probably the biggest game in Colombian football history and I don’t think they’ll disappoint!
